Weekend

How was everybody's weekend?

I had a pretty nice one. On Saturday, I went to my family friend's wedding. She (Nigerian) married a Ghanian. They met while in medical school in upstate New York. My sis and I missed the church ceremony (surprise, surprise) but made it just in time for the cocktail hour and the reception. It was very intimate affair. And by intimate, I mean about 150+ people. This is a big deal considering an average Nigerian wedding will bring out about 350-500 people. Easily. Afterwards, some of us wanted to go watch Think Like a Man. But I guess after all the dancing and white wine sipping, we were definitely on the tired side of thangs and just headed home. Did you watch the movie? Was it good? I'm a Kevin Hart fan (Please, do yourself a favor and watch his stand-up comedies. The man is effin' funny.), so I wanted to support him.

Spraying money on the new married couple.
It's a Nigerian tradition.

My sister with the bride, who is wearing her traditional outfit.
I loved how the top portion was sequin.

Sunday rolled around. Stephanie of Thrift and Style organized a thrifting trip. The first one was in March and they went to the double thrift store in Virginia. This time, it was in Maryland. Value Village in Landover Hills, to be exact. I went with Afro Style. It's been a while since I've thrifted...actually, it's been a while since I've shopped! Eek! So, I was very much waiting for this day to come. Now, I've recently purged out my closet (My blog store is coming soon!) so I knew I couldn't just step into the thrift store and just start accumulating shit again. Nah. My shopping list consisted of two things: skirts and pants. That's it. After two hours, I came away with skirts and a dress. *pats self on the back*

The group.

Carrie's fab statement necklace.

Some of my purchases:

This skirt is huge. But there was no way in hell I was NOT going to purchase it.
The colors are so bright!
It'll probably be worn as a dress.

A oversized sleeveless floral blouse? Yes, please.
My tops are usually XXL or 18/20. This is a 30/32.
Exactly.

Until next time...

Sugarloaf Craft Festival

Where: Montgomery County Fairground
This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to check out the Sugarloaf Craft Festival at the Montgomery Country Fairground. I invited my friend from out of town, ChiChi, to join in on the fun. Over 250 creative minds from all over the nation were at the venue to showcase their work. From accessories to clothing to photography and sculptures, there were a lot to check out. I mean, there is no way you can attend this festival and leave NOT in awe. I just love to see someone talk so passionately about their work. From young to old (there was a couple, 70+ years old, who has been in business for more than 40yrs selling beautiful and funky magnifiers, eyeglass frames and accessories), they are showing off their work of art with pride. It's crazy how one can possess so much talent.

Besides vendors (outside and indoors) there were also craft demonstrations (ex. wheel thrown pottery) and ongoing demos (ex. hand carved bowls). We were entertained with live music from Mbandi Music while strolling around the area.

I highly recommend this festival. The next one two will be this Fall: October 12, 13, 14 and November 16, 17, 18. It will be held at the same location, Montgomery County Fairground. And while typing this post I just discovered that the Sugarloaf Craft Festival stops by Baltimore, Central NJ area and Philadelphia area! For more details, click here.

Alrighty, it's that time again....pictures time! Enjoy.

My favorite vendor at the festival, by a mile, was Mondo Art. Based in South Carolina, Gerardo Leccese showcased his 'one of a kind, tri-dimensional artwork'. I loved each and every one. And, of course, he did not want me to take pictures of his paintings. Of course. I damn near begged him but he refused.  *le sigh* Completely understandable.

Have a great and safe weekend!

I Think There's Something In My Eyes

Gosh. What in the hell was I doing at 9yrs old?

Hmmm...definitely not making my very own arcade, that's for sure! Yeah, I had a bit of a creative mind: writing stories and drawing illustrations. And when I get bored with that, I would read...and read a lot. Also, I created my own version of the Jeopardy game with my siblings. That counts for something...right? Right?!!

But this young boy's story. His creative mind, his determination, his optimism. Yeah, definitely blows my 9 year old self outta the water.

Enjoy the short movie!

Nice Try

This was my casual Friday look for work. Didn't feel like wearing jeans. *shrugs* Anywho, it's also my first time trying the whole collar-with-a-statement necklace trend. Is there, like, an official name for this trend? There has to be. Somebody help me out! I think this is my favorite trend at the moment. I always enjoy seeing when bloggers (and non-bloggers) try this look. It just makes everyone look so stylish...so preppy. Puts me in my happy place. (^_^) The reason why this was my first time is because I just felt for someone with my bustline and stomach, it wouldn't look good on me. Especially, with the addition of a statement necklace. Eek! Yes, I've seen other plus size-ers doing it...and doing it well (ex: Gabi, Bibi) but I was still apprehensive. Then on that lovely Friday, I said to myself, fuck it. Let me give it a try:

I think in order for this to work for me and my body, my shirts have to be a size bigger. Anything my actual size or tighter would just look odd. But that's just me. With the sheer shirt I'm wearing, it's really oversized (click here to see). So much so, that I had to use a skinny belt to shorten it. I think it worked out well enough. *pats self on the back*

I'm definitely stuck on this trend.

Spicy Candy + South Moon Under

Another day, another blogger fashion event. I ain't complaining, though!

This time around, I went to support the lovely fab duo, Spicy Candy DC, and their collaboration with the trendy clothing store, South Moon Under. Together, they decided to bring out a look book of the duo stylin' away from head to toe in items (re: clothing, shoes and accessories) from South Moon Under. And so I went to SMU at the Clarendon, VA location for their Look Book Release Party.

Carlis + Katya = Spicy Candy DC

Also hosting the release party was Dani Stahl, Editor-at-Large at Nylon Magazine and one of the stars of Scouted, an E! Channel series focusing on finding the next big name in modeling.

Even though I missed out on the Spicy Candy DC cupcakes, c/o Georgetown Cupcake (bummer!), still had a great time. Per usual.

What I wore:

Jacket/'Top': Target, Skirt: H&M, Fishnet Tights/Wedges: Avenue, Belt: Dress Barn

I really, really wanted to wear a mint green Lane Bryant shirt that I got last year at Value Village. It went so well with the H&M skirt. But, alas, I just didn't feel right wearing the outfit. Something was...off. You know how you have this whole FABULOUS outfit all planned out in your head and when you actually wear it, something ain't right? Yeah, exactly. Anywho, luckily for me, I had on my favorite black Target dress (wore it to work). Seeing that I had to nix the LB shirt, I instead made the dress a 'top'. And because I went with the black 'top', I wore fishnet tights from Avenue. Completed the look with a faux leather jacket from Target. Scrunched up the sleeves to give it a bit of oomph.

Enjoy the rest of the pictures!

Denim + Lace

Later on in the evening, I switched from my Easter outfit to this look. I feel this look could definitely swing into the 'edgy' territory with some black booties, ankle boots or even combat boots and a funkier purse (a fringe purse, maybe?). Take out the long necklace. Rock more bracelets and a cuff. Add a few rings.

Something to think about for next time.
