Fruitvale Station

I had the pleasure of attending the free screening of Fruitvale. It was held at AMC Loews Theatres in Georgetown and hosted by Sunni and DJ Quik Silva of WPGC-FM 95.5. The film is about Oscar Grant, a 22 year old Bay Area man who was fatally shot by a BART police officer on New Year's Day, and his day leading up to that unfortunate moment. The film shows that while Oscar was not a responsible guy - pretty much a typical young man who fell into some wrong stuff and continued with that pattern for a while - he decided on that day, New Year's Eve (which also happens to be his mom's birthday), that he will turn his life around.

I truly enjoyed the film. It had its fun moments, it had its touching moments (Oscar's renewed relationship with his daughter, Tatiana, was just beautiful to watch). But it was definitely a heartbreaking film. Everyone in the theatre all knew how it was going to end but once it happened, we were all left stunned.

Amazing performances all around, especially from Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan. I've watched Michael grown to become such a phenomenal actor. From The Wire to All My Children to Parenthood. I am so happy for him and I see a bunch of awards in his future due Fruitvale.

Please do yourself a favor and watch this film. And by watch, I mean SUPPORT the movie by heading to your local movie theatre and buying a ticket. *winks*
