Emmys '17

Tessa Thompson in Rosie Assoulin
Looking like a modern day disco queen.
LOVE.

I'm back again with another awards show red carpet recap. It's been awhile, no? Feels like it.

Last night was the Emmy Awards...

The show started off with a predictable win that kinda soured my mood. Which was a shame because earlier, I quite enjoyed Stephen Colbert's opening musical number (his monologue, however, was hit or miss). The show picked up steam with some great wins going to Donald Glover (twice!), Elisabeth Moss, Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe, Ann Dowd, and The Handmaid's Tale.

My favorite win of the night belonged to Sterling K. Brown. Not only was his win an historic one, his speech was so fucking good! I was cheesing quite hard when he thanked his "white family" (his fellow actors on the show, This Is Us) but also when he acknowledged the positive black love that he and his TV wife, Susan Kelechi Watson, portrays on the show. Even comparing them to Martin and Gina from Martin. It was too good. Unfortunately, the Emmy folks thought he was talking a bit too much so his speech was cut off by that orchestral music and, reportedly, turning off his mic. This is usual the protocol when the winner seems to be up on stage for too long, right? Right. But this time around, it was straight up rude! Why? Because a little while ago, Nicole Kidman got to talk up a storm during her win. Yes, I understand she was giving a speech about domestic abuse, especially since it relates to her show. I get it. But I also truly believe her being an Oscar Award winning movie star helped her out a bit, too.

All in all, it was a good show. Now, let's get into some fashion commentary.

Jane Fonda in Brandon Maxwell
Listen. Jane did not come to play with you folks.
Don't ya'll see the bangs? That side swept ponytail?
Not a fan of pink but this looks pretty good on her. From the length to the belt to the flare sleeves.
Great choice in jewelry and accessories.
Zoe Kravitz in Dior Haute Couture
The black with the multi-color bottom definitely works.
It's a strange combo that hits the mark.
But wouldn't be surprised if all anyone sees is her wearing a piƱata skirt.
Loving the haircut.
That particular necklace wasn't needed.
Keri Russell in J. Mendel
From what I've seen from her red carpet style to her street style, Keri likes a bit of edge.
So this dress fits her aesthetic perfectly.
Her makeup needed to be slightly darker.
Anna Chlumsky in custom Sachin & Babi
This is the best I've seen from Anna in a long time.
She always looked so frumpy on the red carpet.
Not this time around.
A part of me wished the whole dress was in the same fabric and color as the skirt portion.
Then again, I do like the contrast of texture and color that's happening here.
Gabrielle Union in Zuhair Murad
She looks so pretty. Great makeup, great hairstyle.
Was the capelet shrug needed? Still trying to figure it out.
Without it, the dress would be the typical sheer embellished black gown.
But with the shrug on, I feel like it dates the whole look.
Evan Rachel Wood in Moschino
Evan is still going strong with the suit game.
This is not as high impact as her other suits from earlier this year.
But she still looks good.
I can't unsee the platform shoe.
Chrissy Metz in custom Lela Rose
She would glow so much more if the dress was in a brighter color.
Hell, I may even say black would've been a better choice.
Not sure why I'm not feeling this shade of green on her.
Also, the dress is too long.
Issa Rae in Vera Wang
She sure does have a great smile.
Too bad the dress is a hot ass mess.
Fantastic color on her. Love the makeup and hair.
But the dress? A big ol' nah.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Chanel
This is not the kinda Chanel I would want in my closet.
What is going on here, exactly?
I know Tracee likes out-there fashion. And I'm talking fashun.
This is fashun.
And it's not my cup of tea.
While I love to see Tracee rockin' the all-back cornrows, it wasn't needed for this look.
The belt makes my eyes twitch.
Stranger Things boys.
My babies.

Can't wait for the show to return during Halloween.
Honestly, the only reason why I put up this photo is because of the purple printed smoking jacket.
Homeboy got some style!

The navy blue velvet jacket with the embroidered panel is a nice look, too.
Donald Glover (right) in Gucci
And if I'm still being honest, I definitely wanted to crop out dude on the left so Donald could get his purple shine on.
But I kinda felt bad.
So dude gets to stay intact.
Donald looks amazing. The suit is beyond fantastic. The haircut is on point. You peep the yellow pocket square, though?
He wins.
